Proper Usage of Article 'THE'

In our previous article, we have already discussed the use of articles A & An ( If you missed that article, click here to read that one first). Now let's learn about the remaining article The.

THE is called a definite article. Definite means Specific. Use THE when talking about something which is already known to the listener or which has been previously mentioned, introduced or discussed.

1. Before superlative forms  

  • The Most attractive
  • The Tallest 
  • The Best

 2. Before musical instruments  

  • The violin
  • The tabla
  • The trumpet

 3. When we speak of a particular person or thing already referred to

  • I dislike the fellow.

 4. Before Ordinal numbers

  • The First
  • The Sixth
  • The Tenth, etc.
  Note: Number's are written in two type
             1. Cardinal Number:  One, Two, Three, Four
             2. Ordinal Number:  First, Second, Third, Forth

 5. Before the political parties

  • The BJP.
  • The Congress
  • The Janata party.

 6. Before the Aeroplanes, Ships, Trains etc

  • The Makalu (airplane)
  • The Titanic (ship)
  • The Rajdhani express (train)

 7. Before name of an empire, dynasty or historical event

  • The Gupta dynasties
  • The Old stone Age
  • The First World War
  • The American Revolution

 8. Before the parts of body

  • He was wounded in the leg.
  • She hit me on the back.

 9. Before positive form in a position

  • Narendra Modi, the prime minister.
  • Alexander, the great.

10. Before adjectives to make them nouns

  • The Poor
  • The Dead
  • The Blind
  • The Rich

  • The poor would favor him.
  • Chirag from the Dead.

16. Before the comparative degree

17. Before caste and communities

18. Before physical positions

  • The back of the house.

  • The top of the mountain.

19. In certain idiomatic phrases

  • In the air
  • In the right
  • In the town
  • Out of the question
  • On the contrary

20. Before nationality (plural)

  • The Indians
  • The Asians
  • The Greeks

21. Before language to signify nationality

  • The Japanese are patriots out and out.
  • The Chinese are hard working.
