Omission of the Articles

Hi friends, we have learnt where should we use A, An, and The. Now we shall learn where shouldn't we use these articles. Following are the conditions where we shouldn't use any article.

1. Before proper nouns 

     We do not use articles before the names of countries, people, continents, cities, rivers and lakes.
  • China is a big country. (NOT The China)
  • Delhi is the capital of India. (NOT The Delhi)

2. Before uncountable nouns

     We do not use articles before uncountable and abstract nouns used in a general sense
  • Sugar is bad for your teeth. (NOT The sugar)
  • Honey is sweet.
  • Wisdom is better than riches.
     Note that uncountable nouns take the article the when used in a particular sense.
  • Would you pass the sugar
  • The sugar on the table.

3. Before plural countable nouns

    We do not use articles before plural countable nouns used in a general sense.
  • Computers are useful machines.
  • Children usually rush about.

4. Before languages 

    We do not use articles before the names of languages.
  • He knows Gujarati very well. (NOT He knows the Gujarati very well.)
  • They speak Chinese at home.

5. Before the names of meals

    We do not use articles before the name of meals.
  • Lunch is ready.
  • Mother is cooking dinner.

6. Before school, college, university, bed, church, hospital, prison etc.

  • I go to bed early.
  • His dad is still in hospital.
  • We learned English at school.
     Note: The is used before these words when the reference is to the building or object rather than to the normal activity that goes on there.
  • I met her at the church. (Here the reference is to the building and not to the activity that is going on there.) 
  • I went to the hospital to see my friend.

7. Before modes of travel

    We do not use articles before modes of travel.
  • He will go by air.
  • She will go by train.

8. Before names of relations like 'Father, Mother, Uncle' etc.

    We do not use articles before names of relations.

  • Father will go to Kolkata tomorrow.
  • Aunt is expected any moment.

9. Before 'hobbies, professions and sports' 

    We do not use articles before hobbies, professions and sports.
  • Gardening is his hobby.
  • Dancing is her profession.
